Why Humanities Education?
To paint a picture you need to paint the backdrop first. The details come later. Without a sense of life's raw eclectic wholeness its real meaning is hidden from us; a myopic life cannot see the bigger picture. Why is that important? Well, to begin with, it's important to our urban young people. Perhaps, if they saw gang involvement as a basic human need to belong and to be loved their horizons would encompass more than its violence. Perhaps, upon understanding the torturous life of the addict, drug dealers might think twice at the thought of dispensing pain, disillusionment, and death. Perhaps, if world leaders understood the common elements of religious Fundamentalism and its relationship to Ideology (that these are not limited to Islamic terrorism) they might take a second look at war as a means to resolve socio-political crises. I could go on ... but you get the point. Humanities education is the central learning modality of the future. We at the YSC believe this from the deepest core of our being. It will change the world if we teach it. We guarantee it.

Remembering Maria del Carmen Perez, our first Psychology Interviewer who passed away very suddenly on March/09. She was a highly experienced warrior in the areas of Substance Abuse Prevention and Counseling. Maria held several professional degrees -- including a Masters' from Shippensbury College (Secondary Education). She worked as a Certified Prevention Specialist, Addiction Counselor, and a Cultural Competency Coordinator in her home state of Pennsylvania. Though she will not be physically present in the dedication of the school she helped found we are thrilled to have her daughter Zeeva Jackson as her representative and replacement!
